The only hardwood company in North Alabama using Rubio Monocoat®
Plenty of shops will sell you a film finish. Some are Bona certified and still put down LVP, vinyl, and carpet. We're the only hardwood company in North Alabama using Rubio Monocoat®. Chroma is the color system. Rubio is the 0% VOC hardwax oil. We don't claim every finish brand is ours alone. Rubio Monocoat® in North Alabama is a different story: we're the hardwood company using it.
We're a hardwood company. LVP, vinyl, carpet, and laminate aren't what we install. A showroom that also sells vinyl is a different business. Hardwood install and sand-and-finish. No LVP, vinyl, carpet, or laminate. No screen-and-recoat. No cabinets. Hardwood sand-and-finish is the work. Rubio Monocoat® Oil Plus 2C is the oil we apply when the house wants a natural look and a 0% VOC finish.
One coat: color and protection together
Oil Plus 2C colors and protects interior wood in a single layer — a true monocoat, not a stain plus a stack of film coats. When applied correctly, it bonds to wood fibers rather than to itself, so you do not get lap lines or overlap marks. The wood keeps a natural look and feel. Stairs, landings, and floors take the same system so the house reads as one job. Coverage is efficient: the wood takes what it needs, and surplus does not build a film.
That schedule matters in a lived-in North Alabama house. Fewer wet-finish days. Typical product literature describes light use around a day and the majority of cure in a couple of days, with full cure taking longer. That is typical, not a guarantee. Kids and pets still stay off the work until it cures — we leave a written schedule and walk that through on the free on-site estimate. Call (256) 665-2161.
0% VOC — no water, no solvents
Rubio advertises Oil Plus 2C as a 0% VOC hardwax oil. It does not contain water or solvents. That is the indoor-air claim we use for this system: zero VOC in the product, for rooms people actually live in.
Dust containment keeps sanding dust out of the air, ductwork, and furniture. A 0% VOC oil is the finish side of that same lived-in house: kids, pets, and rooms you cannot abandon for a week of solvent smell. When the job calls for a waterborne film instead, Bona Traffic HD is the low-VOC, GREENGUARD Gold certified Bona product — that certification stays on the Bona system. Read Bona Chroma®.
Wear, water, heat, and a spot you can actually repair
Manufacturer-described durability for Oil Plus 2C includes resistance to wear, water, and heat — protection built for high-traffic interior wood, not a furniture-only oil. Because the oil bonds to wood fibers, a worn or damaged area can often be repaired locally instead of recoating a whole room. Maintenance is a simple oil-care routine. Consumption is low: the wood takes what it needs. It is not a screen-and-recoat. We don't sell screen-and-recoat as a product.
Hardwood install and sand-and-finish. No LVP, vinyl, carpet, or laminate. No screen-and-recoat. No cabinets. If the boards can take another sand, we sand and finish. If they cannot, we install new hardwood. Rubio Monocoat® stays on wood.
The other path: Bona Chroma®
Rubio Monocoat® does not replace Bona Chroma®. We use Bona Chroma® color systems in North Alabama. Chroma is the stain and tint system we use when a floor needs a specific tone, or when complementary pigment in a film finish can correct color without a full re-sand. Traffic HD on those jobs is a waterborne, low-VOC Bona topcoat that is GREENGUARD Gold certified — a product certification, not a company badge. Rubio is the 0% VOC hardwax oil. We choose on site. Read Bona Chroma® or the refinishing process for where stain and topcoat sit in a full sand-and-finish.
Rubio Monocoat® FAQ
- Are you the only North Alabama hardwood company using Rubio Monocoat®?
- Yes. Other shops may sell film finishes or carry a Bona badge. Rubio Monocoat® Oil Plus 2C is the 0% VOC hardwax oil we use when the job calls for natural color and protection in one coat. LVP, vinyl, carpet, and laminate aren't what we install.
- When do you use Rubio Monocoat® instead of Bona Chroma® and Traffic HD?
- Rubio is a natural hardwax oil: color and protection in one coat, a wood feel rather than a film. Rubio advertises Oil Plus 2C as 0% VOC, with no water or solvents in the product. We use it when that look fits — floors and stairs in a lived-in house. Bona Chroma® is a color system in a film-build finish, often with Bona Traffic HD, which is low-VOC and GREENGUARD Gold certified (Bona product certification, not a company badge). We use Chroma when the job needs a specific tone, color correction on a sound floor, or a traditional coated topcoat. Two different systems. We pick one. We sample on your boards.
- Can you use Rubio Monocoat® on stairs as well as floors in a lived-in house?
- Yes. Interior floors and stairs can take the same oil so treads, landings, and adjoining rooms match. Dust containment is still the sanding plan in a lived-in house. Pets and kids stay off wet finish. Typical product literature describes light use around a day and the majority of cure in a couple of days, with full cure taking longer. That is typical, not a guarantee. We leave a written schedule. Rubio is not a screen-and-recoat, and it is not for LVP, vinyl, carpet, or laminate. We do not refinish cabinets.
- How is Rubio maintained, and can a spot be repaired later?
- Maintenance is a simple oil-care routine. Because the oil bonds to wood fibers, a worn or damaged area can often be repaired locally instead of recoating a whole room. Manufacturer-described durability includes resistance to wear, water, and heat. Coverage is efficient — low consumption, because surplus does not build a film.
