What dust-contained sanding means on an Alabama Hardwood Restoration job
Dust-contained sanding is how AHR cuts a floor to raw wood in a lived-in North Alabama house. We run professional, high-efficiency extraction so sanding dust stays out of the air, ductwork, and furniture. Rooms we are not sanding stay usable. Site protection comes first. Then the sand. Then stain and a protective coat.
It is advanced and virtually dustless — not a promise of zero dust. A full sand still makes dust. Containment is the plan that keeps that dust from filling the house. Pets and children stay out of the work area while we sand and while finish cures. That is the Alabama Hardwood Restoration method. We are not Dustless Hardwood Refinishing, the other brand.
Full sand-and-finish is not a screen-and-recoat
We do a full sand-and-finish, not a screen-and-recoat. A screen-and-recoat is a light abrasion and a new coat over the existing film. It is the wrong answer when traffic lanes are worn through, stains are in the wood, or the sheen is uneven from wear. A full sand takes the floor to raw wood, then stain and a protective coat.
Multi-flooring shops sell a screen-and-recoat as a cheap refresh. We will not. Color correction in the Bona Chroma® finish build is different: it can change a tone without a full re-sand when the existing finish is sound. That is not a screen-and-recoat, and it is not a shortcut when the boards are worn through. We decide on site. More on sanding vs refinishing and the hardwood sand-and-finish process.
Indoor air: Rubio Oil Plus 2C advertised 0% VOC vs Bona Traffic HD low-VOC GREENGUARD Gold
Two finish systems, two indoor-air claims — kept separate. We're the only hardwood company in North Alabama using Rubio Monocoat®. Rubio Monocoat® Oil Plus 2C is advertised as a 0% VOC hardwax oil: natural color and protection in one coat, with no water or solvents in the product.
We use Bona Chroma® color systems in North Alabama. Jobs that call for a film-build color system use Bona Chroma® stain, often with Bona Traffic HD — a waterborne, low-VOC professional finish that is GREENGUARD Gold certified. That GREENGUARD Gold label is on the Bona product, not a company-wide certification for Alabama Hardwood Restoration, and not a Rubio claim. Two different systems. We pick one. We sample on your boards.
Kids, pets, and lived-in homes — when each finish system fits
Most North Alabama jobs are houses people are still living in. Dust containment is built for that. High-efficiency extraction keeps sanding dust out of the air, ductwork, and furniture. Pets and children stay out of the work area while we sand and while finish is curing. We walk the schedule through on the free on-site visit so the household can plan around the job.
- Rubio Monocoat® Oil Plus 2C fits when the house wants a natural wood feel and a 0% VOC hardwax oil — color and protection in one coat. Typical product literature describes light use around a day and the majority of cure in a couple of days. That is typical, not a guarantee. Rubio Monocoat®.
- Bona Chroma® with Bona Traffic HD fits when the job needs a specific tone, color correction on a sound floor, or a traditional coated topcoat. Traffic HD is low-VOC and GREENGUARD Gold certified on the Bona product — not a company badge. Kids and pets still stay off wet film. Bona Chroma®.
- Hardwood install and sand-and-finish. No LVP, vinyl, carpet, or laminate. No screen-and-recoat. No cabinets. We install hardwood and we sand-and-finish it. That's hardwood floor refinishing, not a flooring showroom.

Dust-contained sanding FAQ
- Do you offer dustless hardwood refinishing in Huntsville?
- We do dust-contained sanding as Alabama Hardwood Restoration. That is our method in lived-in Huntsville and North Alabama houses — not the Dustless Hardwood Refinishing brand. Professional, high-efficiency extraction keeps sanding dust out of the air, ductwork, and furniture. It is advanced and virtually dustless, not a promise of zero dust. Pets and children stay out of the work area while we sand and while finish cures. Call (256) 665-2161.
- Is a full sand-and-finish the same as a screen-and-recoat?
- No. We do a full sand-and-finish. We do not offer screen-and-recoat. A screen-and-recoat is a light abrasion and a new coat over existing finish. A full sand takes the floor to raw wood, then stain and a protective coat. A light abrasion will not fix a traffic lane worn through the finish. More on sanding vs refinishing. Call (256) 665-2161.
- Which hardwood finish is better for indoor air with kids and pets — Rubio or Bona Traffic HD?
- Depends on the look you want. They're different products. We don't stack them. Rubio Monocoat® Oil Plus 2C is advertised as 0% VOC — color and protection in one coat. Jobs that want a film-build topcoat use Bona Chroma® with Bona Traffic HD, which is low-VOC and GREENGUARD Gold certified on the Bona product — not a company badge, and not a Rubio claim.
