Hardwood floor refinishing process in Huntsville & North Alabama

Dust-contained sanding, then Rubio Monocoat® Oil Plus 2C (advertised 0% VOC) or Bona Traffic HD (low-VOC, GREENGUARD Gold certified Bona product) in lived-in homes, from a free on-site estimate to the walkthrough. Dust-contained sanding, custom stairs, Rubio Monocoat®, and Bona Chroma® color systems — hardwood floor refinishing in Huntsville and North Alabama, not a vinyl-and-carpet catalog. We install hardwood and we sand-and-finish it. That's hardwood floor refinishing, not a flooring showroom.

Steps

From consult to cure

  1. 01

    Consult and estimate

We come to the house — there is no public street address. We measure the rooms and stairs, check board thickness and species, look at traffic wear and sun fade, and talk through color. You get a written estimate. The visit is free. Call (256) 665-2161.

  2. 02

    Prep the lived-in house

Most North Alabama jobs are houses people are still living in. We protect the work area, move what has to move, and plan room by room so the rest of the house stays usable. Pets and kids stay out of the rooms we are sanding and out of wet finish.

  3. 03

    Sand with dust containment

A full sand cuts through the old finish and a thin layer of wood until the floor is raw. That is the job when traffic lanes are worn through, the film is failing, or the color has to start from bare boards. We run high-efficiency extraction so dust stays out of the air, ductwork, and furniture. It is virtually dustless — not a promise of zero dust. We do not sell a screen-and-recoat. A light abrasion and a new coat will not fix a lane that is already through the finish.

  4. 04

Stain — including when Bona Chroma® or Rubio Monocoat® fits

We sample stain on your boards under the house's light before we commit a room. Bona Chroma® is the stain system we use when the job needs a specific tone, or when complementary pigment in the finish can correct a color without a full re-sand — only on a sound floor. That's how an Athens 2¼" red oak job avoided starting over. It isn't a shortcut when the boards are worn through. Jobs that want a natural hardwax oil instead of a film system can use Rubio Monocoat® — we're the only hardwood company in North Alabama using it. Color and protection go down in one coat. Rubio and Chroma are different products. We pick the one that fits. We don't stack them.

  5. 05

Protective finish — Rubio Monocoat® or Bona Traffic HD

We coat with a high-traffic finish built for family houses. Jobs that call for a hardwax oil get Rubio Monocoat® Oil Plus 2C — advertised as 0% VOC, no water or solvents in the product; we're the only hardwood company in North Alabama using it. Jobs that call for a waterborne film get Bona Traffic HD, which is low-VOC and GREENGUARD Gold certified. That GREENGUARD Gold label is on the Bona product, not a company-wide certification. Kids and pets still stay off wet finish. Stairs, landings, and hallways take the same system as the adjoining rooms so the sheen and wear match. Hardwood install and sand-and-finish. No cabinets. No LVP, vinyl, carpet, or laminate.

  6. 06

    Cure and walkthrough

When the last coat is on, we walk the job with you. Light sock traffic follows the schedule we leave you. Typical product literature for Rubio Monocoat® describes light use around a day and the majority of cure in a couple of days; film-build Traffic HD has its own window. That is typical, not a guarantee. Rugs, pets, and furniture wait. The on-site days are the sand-and-finish window. The finish keeps curing after we leave.

Dust-contained sanding, then an indoor-air finish

Lived-in houses get dust-contained sanding — professional, high-efficiency extraction so dust stays out of the air, ductwork, and furniture. It is virtually dustless, not zero dust. Pets and kids stay out of the work area. After the sand, the finish is Rubio Monocoat® Oil Plus 2C (advertised 0% VOC) or Bona Traffic HD (low-VOC, GREENGUARD Gold on the Bona product). Dust-contained sanding and indoor-air finishes.

Finish options

Hardwax oil: Rubio Monocoat® when a natural one-coat finish fits — color and protection in a single layer, advertised 0% VOC. We're the only hardwood company in North Alabama using Rubio Monocoat®.

Film-build: Bona Chroma® stain with Bona Traffic HD when that system fits — specific tones, color correction on a sound floor, a traditional coated topcoat. Traffic HD is low-VOC and GREENGUARD Gold certified (Bona product, not a company badge). Two different finishes. We pick one. We don't stack them.

Hardwood only — not a flooring showroom

We're a hardwood company. LVP, vinyl, carpet, and laminate aren't what we install. A showroom that also sells vinyl is a different business. We sand, stain, and refinish the hardwood you already have, or we install new solid, prefinished, or engineered hardwood when the boards cannot take another sanding. Engineered hardwood refinishing eligibility is an on-site wear-layer check — not a millimeter spec from a photo. Stairs can be in the same job. That is sand-and-finish specialist work, not a catalog of every floor covering.

  • A light abrasion and a new coat will not fix a traffic lane worn through the finish. Multi-flooring shops sell a screen-and-recoat as a cheap refresh. We don't.
  • If a room needs a new floor, the conversation is hardwood — not LVP, vinyl, carpet, or laminate.
  • Floors and stairs stay the focus. We don't refinish cabinets, so the finish schedule and the dust plan stay honest.

Process FAQ

How long does hardwood floor refinishing take?
Most lived-in North Alabama jobs run about two to five days on site. A small room or a clear coat with no stairs can land near two to three days. Main living areas with stain are often three to four. A whole-house refinish with stairs is typically four to five days, and a large house or a rebuild can run longer. Timeline depends on square footage, stain versus a clear coat, how many coats the floor needs, and whether stairs are in the job. We put a written schedule on the free estimate. Call (256) 665-2161.
Can you refinish engineered hardwood, or only solid?
Both, when the wood can take it. Solid oak — the ¾-inch strip in a lot of North Alabama houses — can usually take another full sand. Engineered plank depends on the wear layer. Some have enough wood on top for a careful sand. Some don't. We check thickness on site and say so. If it's too thin, we say so. If a sand will do, we don't talk you into a tear-out. More on whether engineered hardwood can be refinished.
When do you do a full sand, and when do you not?
A full sand is the job when traffic wear is through the finish, the old film is failing, pet stains or gray sun fade are in the wood, or the color you want has to start from raw boards. A screen-and-recoat will not fix a worn-through traffic lane, and we will not sell it as a cheap refresh. Color correction in the Bona Chroma® finish is different: it can change a tone without a full re-sand when the existing finish is sound. We decide that on site — not from a photo.
Do you install LVP, vinyl, carpet, or laminate?
No. If the oak can take another sand, we refinish it. If it can't, we install new hardwood. Vinyl, carpet, laminate, a screen-and-recoat, and cabinet refinishing aren't the work. More on refinish hardwood or replace it with LVP.
Are your hardwood finishes low-VOC or GREENGUARD Gold certified?
Rubio Monocoat® Oil Plus 2C is advertised as 0% VOC; we're the only hardwood company in North Alabama using it. Bona Traffic HD is a waterborne, low-VOC finish and is GREENGUARD Gold certified — that GREENGUARD label is on the Bona product, not the company. Kids and pets still stay off wet finish. We choose the system on site. More on dust-contained sanding and indoor-air finishes.
