When the boards are sound, refinish wins
Refinish hardwood when the boards have enough wood left and the cupping or damage is not structural. Sound oak in a Huntsville ranch, a Madison builder house, or an older Decatur two-story is still a floor. Traffic lanes, gray sun fade, and a film worn through the hall do not mean the wood is done. They mean the finish is done.
A full sand-and-finish takes that floor to raw wood, then stain and a protective coat. The grain comes back as one floor. Covering sound boards with LVP hides the wood, adds a floating layer, and throws away a floor that still had years in it. We check thickness on site. We do not invent a wear-layer number from a photo, and we do not quote a per-square-foot price over the phone. If a sand will do, we do not talk you into a tear-out. More on sanding vs refinishing and whether engineered hardwood can be refinished.
When you replace, replace with hardwood — not LVP
Replacement is the honest job when the floor is too thin for another sand, water damage is past a local repair, or the room never had hardwood. Then we install new unfinished solid hardwood, unfinished engineered hardwood, or prefinished hardwood — and we sand and finish on site when the job calls for it. That is still a hardwood floor.
LVP is not hardwood. It is a printed wear layer over a vinyl core. It does not sand. It does not take stain. It does not become the oak that was already in the house. If Decatur, Madison, or Huntsville boards cannot take another sand, we replace them with hardwood, not vinyl plank. Unfinished solid hardwood, unfinished engineered hardwood, and stair parts are the supply for those installs — not a showroom wall of vinyl. See new hardwood installation.
We do not sell LVP
We're a hardwood company. LVP, vinyl, carpet, and laminate aren't what we install. A showroom that also sells vinyl is a different business. Hardwood install and sand-and-finish. No LVP, vinyl, carpet, or laminate. No screen-and-recoat. No cabinets. Flooring stores in the Huntsville–Decatur corridor will sell LVP as the easy answer when oak looks tired. That is a different business. We sand hardwood, finish it, install it, and build stairs that match the floor.
We also do not put LVP over existing hardwood, and we do not convert a worn oak hall into vinyl plank. If you want hardwood floor refinishing in Huntsville or North Alabama, call a hardwood company. If you want vinyl, call a showroom. We install hardwood and we sand-and-finish it. That's hardwood floor refinishing, not a flooring showroom.
Huntsville, Madison, and Decatur — same hardwood answer
Refinish hardwood or replace with LVP is the question flooring stores want you to ask. The honest fork is refinish vs replace with hardwood. A Huntsville ranch with original strip, hardwood floor refinishing Madison AL on builder oak in Town Madison or Clift Farm, and older strip in hardwood floor refinishing Decatur AL are different houses. They are the same rule: if the boards can take a sand, we refinish. If they cannot, we install unfinished solid, unfinished engineered, or prefinished hardwood.
Madison new-construction rooms that never had oak are not an LVP job. They are an unfinished hardwood flooring Huntsville install, then a sand-and-finish under the house's light. Decatur two-stories with worn treads are a stair-and-floor job, not a vinyl nosing. We come to the house. We do not invent a wear-layer number from a photo.
Dust-contained sanding in a lived-in house
Most North Alabama refinish jobs are houses people are still living in. Dust-contained sanding uses professional, high-efficiency extraction so sanding dust stays out of the air, ductwork, and furniture. Rooms we are not sanding stay usable. It is virtually dustless — not a promise of zero dust. Pets and children stay out of the work area while we sand and while finish cures.
That is a full sand-and-finish, not a screen-and-recoat. A light abrasion and a new coat will not fix a traffic lane worn through the finish. The hardwood sand-and-finish process is consult, prep, sand, stain, coat, walkthrough.
Indoor air: Rubio 0% VOC or Bona Traffic HD low-VOC GREENGUARD Gold
Two finish systems, two indoor-air claims — kept separate. We're the only hardwood company in North Alabama using Rubio Monocoat®. Rubio Monocoat® Oil Plus 2C is advertised as a 0% VOC hardwax oil: natural color and protection in one coat, with no water or solvents in the product.
We use Bona Chroma® color systems in North Alabama. Jobs that call for a film-build color system use Bona Chroma® stain, often with Bona Traffic HD — a waterborne, low-VOC professional finish that is GREENGUARD Gold certified. That GREENGUARD Gold label is on the Bona product, not a company-wide certification for Alabama Hardwood Restoration, and not a Rubio claim. Two different systems. We pick one. We sample on your boards. Kids and pets still stay off wet finish.

Refinish hardwood or replace with LVP — FAQ
- Should I refinish hardwood or put LVP over it?
- If the boards are sound, refinish them. Do not cover sound hardwood with LVP. Traffic lanes and a worn film mean the finish is done, not the wood. Alabama Hardwood Restoration does a full sand-and-finish in Huntsville and North Alabama. We do not sell LVP, and we do not put vinyl plank over existing oak.
- When should I replace hardwood instead of refinishing it?
- Replace when the boards are too thin for another sand, water damage is past a local repair, or the room never had hardwood. Then we install new unfinished solid, unfinished engineered, or prefinished hardwood — not LVP. Thickness is checked on site. We do not invent a wear-layer number from a photo. More on whether engineered hardwood can be refinished.
- Do you install LVP in Huntsville or North Alabama?
- No. Hardwood install and sand-and-finish only. If the oak can take another sand, we refinish it. If it cannot, we install new hardwood. Vinyl, carpet, and laminate stay off the truck. Call (256) 665-2161.
- What hardwood do you install if the floor cannot be refinished?
- Unfinished solid hardwood, unfinished engineered hardwood, or prefinished hardwood — then sand-and-finish on site when the job calls for it. Unfinished hardwood flooring in Huntsville is job supply, not a showroom. Stair parts go with those installs. We do not publish brands, SKUs, or a per-square-foot price.
- Can you refinish hardwood in a lived-in house without filling it with dust?
- We run dust-contained sanding: high-efficiency extraction so sanding dust stays out of the air, the ducts, and the furniture. Virtually dustless, not zero dust. Kids and pets stay out of the work area. Rubio Monocoat® Oil Plus 2C is advertised 0% VOC. Bona Chroma® jobs that want a film-build topcoat use Bona Traffic HD — low-VOC and GREENGUARD Gold on the Bona product, not a company badge.
- Should I refinish hardwood or replace it with LVP in Huntsville?
- If Huntsville oak is sound, refinish it. Do not cover it with LVP. If the boards cannot take another sand, we install new hardwood — unfinished solid, unfinished engineered, or prefinished — not vinyl plank. Alabama Hardwood Restoration does not sell LVP in Huntsville or North Alabama. Call (256) 665-2161.
- Should I refinish builder oak in Madison or replace it with LVP?
- Madison builder oak that still has wood left should be refinished, not covered. If a room never had hardwood, we install hardwood — not LVP. Same answer in Town Madison, Clift Farm, Midtown, and downtown Madison. More on hardwood floor refinishing Madison AL. Call (256) 665-2161.
- Is the answer different in Decatur than in Huntsville?
- No. Older Decatur strip and newer Huntsville or Madison oak get the same fork: refinish when the boards can take a sand, replace with hardwood when they cannot. We do not sell LVP in hardwood floor refinishing Decatur AL either. Call (256) 665-2161.
