Hardwood sanding vs refinishing in Huntsville, AL

Same crew, different scope. A full sand takes the floor to raw wood. A refinish or color correction may not. We decide on site — not from a photo.

What a full sand is

Sanding means cutting through the old finish and a thin layer of wood until the floor is raw. That is the job when traffic wear, deep scratches, gray sun fade, or an old film will not come off any other way. After the sand we stain if you want color, then apply protective topcoats.

Most Huntsville and North Alabama houses we see — original oak in a lived-in home — need this kind of sand before a new finish will last.

What refinishing covers

People say “refinish” for the whole process: sand, stain, coat. On a job, refinishing can also mean recoating or correcting color without cutting the floor back to bare wood. That only works when the existing finish is sound and the boards do not need a full cut-in.

We use Bona Chroma® color systems in North Alabama. On an Athens 2¼" red oak install, tinting sealer and topcoats with a complementary Bona Chroma® shade neutralized a heavy red pull and saved a full re-sand. Color correction is not a shortcut for a floor that is worn through.

When each applies

  • Full sand: worn traffic lanes, peeling or dark old finish, pet stains in the wood, or a color change that has to start from raw boards.
  • Refinish / recoat: the film is intact, the wood is not scooped out, and you want sheen or light refresh — not a new species look.
  • Color correction in the finish build: the stain already went down, the undertone is wrong, and pigment in sealer and topcoat can balance it without stripping.
  • Replace or new install: the boards are too thin for another sand, water damage is past a local repair, or the room never had hardwood. Engineered floors get the same on-site wear-layer check — see whether engineered hardwood can be refinished. We do not replace hardwood with LVP — see refinish hardwood or replace it with LVP.

Dust containment

Sanding is the dusty step. We run high-efficiency containment so dust stays out of the air, ductwork, and furniture. That matters in a lived-in Huntsville house more than in an empty new build. Pets and kids stay out of the work area while we sand and while finish cures. Dust-contained sanding and indoor-air finishes.

Thickness, species, and the old finish decide the scope. We measure, look at the stairs, and put the sand-versus-refinish call in a written estimate. No street shop — we come to the house.
