How much does hardwood floor refinishing cost?

How long does hardwood floor refinishing take, and when can we use the floors?
Most lived-in North Alabama jobs run about two to five days on site, depending on square footage, stain, coats, and stairs. Light sock traffic follows the schedule we leave you. Rubio's literature typically talks about light use around a day and most of the cure in a couple of days; Bona Traffic HD has its own window. That's typical, not a guarantee. Rugs, pets, and furniture wait. The finish keeps curing after we leave. See the hardwood sand-and-finish process.
What is the difference between a screen-and-recoat and a full sand-and-finish?
A screen-and-recoat is a light abrasion and a new coat over what's already there. Fine if the film is sound. Useless if the finish is worn through, stains are in the wood, or traffic lanes have gone dull. We take the floor to raw wood, then stain and a protective coat. That's a full sand-and-finish. We don't sell the shortcut. More on sanding vs refinishing.
Can engineered hardwood be refinished?
Often, if enough wear layer is left. Some floors have wood on top for a careful sand. Some don't. We look in the house in Huntsville and North Alabama and tell you which — no invented millimeter spec from a photo. If it's too thin, we say so. If a sand will do, we don't talk you into a tear-out. More on whether engineered hardwood can be refinished.
What is the least-dusty option for a house with kids and pets?
Dust-contained sanding, then a finish that belongs in a lived-in house. High-efficiency extraction keeps sanding dust out of the air, the ducts, and the furniture. Virtually dustless, not zero dust. Kids and pets stay out of the work area while we sand and while finish cures. Rubio Monocoat® Oil Plus 2C is advertised as 0% VOC. Jobs that want a film-build topcoat use Bona Chroma® with Bona Traffic HD — low-VOC and GREENGUARD Gold on the Bona product, not a company badge, and not a Rubio claim. More on dust-contained sanding and indoor-air finishes.
Rubio Monocoat vs Bona Chroma — when does each fit?
Two different systems. We pick one. We don't stack them. Rubio Monocoat® Oil Plus 2C is a hardwax oil: advertised 0% VOC, color and protection in one coat. We're the only hardwood company in North Alabama using it. Bona Chroma® is a film-build color system. Use it when you need a specific tone, a color correction on a sound floor, or a traditional coated topcoat — often with Bona Traffic HD (low-VOC, GREENGUARD Gold on the Bona product, not a company badge). We sample on your boards.
Should I refinish hardwood or replace it with LVP?
If the boards can take another sand, refinish them. If they can't, we install new solid, prefinished, or engineered hardwood. We don't sell LVP. Hardwood install and sand-and-finish in Huntsville and North Alabama — vinyl plank is a different crew. More on refinish hardwood or replace with LVP.
What makes Alabama Hardwood Restoration different from flooring showrooms?
Showrooms sell a wall of products. We sand hardwood, finish it, install it, and build stairs that match the floor. Dust-contained sanding. We're the only hardwood company in North Alabama using Rubio Monocoat® (Oil Plus 2C advertised 0% VOC). We use Bona Chroma® color systems, often with Bona Traffic HD — low-VOC, GREENGUARD Gold on the Bona product, not a company badge. LVP, vinyl, carpet, laminate, a screen-and-recoat, and cabinet refinishing aren't the work.
Do you install LVP?
No. Hardwood install and sand-and-finish in Huntsville and North Alabama. If the oak can take another sand, we refinish it. If it can't, we install new hardwood. Vinyl, carpet, and laminate stay off the truck. Refinish hardwood or replace with LVP.
What does dust-contained sanding mean?
Dust-contained sanding means we run high-efficiency extraction while we cut the floor to raw wood, so sanding dust stays out of the air, the ducts, and the furniture. Rooms we aren't sanding stay usable. Virtually dustless — not a promise of zero dust. Kids and pets stay out of the work area. That's our method in Huntsville and North Alabama, not the Dustless Hardwood Refinishing brand. More on dust-contained sanding and indoor-air finishes.

What is Bona Chroma®, and do you use it in North Alabama?
Yes. We use Bona Chroma® stain when the job needs a specific tone, often with Bona Traffic HD — a waterborne, low-VOC, GREENGUARD Gold certified topcoat. That GREENGUARD label is on the Bona product, not the company. Color work in the finish can correct a tone without a full re-sand. That's how an Athens 2¼" red oak job avoided starting over. Kids and pets still stay off wet finish. Bona Chroma®.
Do you use Rubio Monocoat®, and is it 0% VOC?
Yes. We're the only hardwood company in North Alabama using it. Rubio advertises Oil Plus 2C as a 0% VOC hardwax oil — color and protection in one coat, no water or solvents in the product. Bona Chroma® is the color-system path; Rubio is the hardwax-oil path. When a waterborne film is the better fit, we use Bona Traffic HD — low-VOC and GREENGUARD Gold certified on the Bona product, not a company badge. Rubio Monocoat®.
Do you sell unfinished hardwood flooring or stair parts?
Yes. Unfinished solid hardwood, unfinished engineered hardwood, and stair parts — treads, risers, skirt boards, and transitions. That wood is for the installs and stair jobs we do, and for homeowners who want unfinished material we'll sand and finish. We're not a big-box store and we don't keep a public showroom. Unfinished hardwood flooring in Huntsville.
Do you refinish or build custom stairs?
